I noticed it when I stepped outside this morning.
The air felt different against my skin. It wasn’t cold enough for a sweater, but there was a coolness to it that hadn’t been there a few weeks ago. The kind that makes you linger outside a little longer instead of immediately thinking about how warm the day is going to get.
Then I looked down at the grass.
It was covered in dew.
Tiny drops of water clung to every blade, catching the morning light and making the whole yard look almost freshly washed. It hadn’t rained overnight. The dew had simply settled there while we slept, quietly covering everything before the day began.
For the first time this year, September actually felt like September.
The afternoons are still warm, and most of the trees haven’t started changing yet. There are plenty of signs that summer isn’t quite finished. But the mornings are beginning to tell a different story.
The sun is coming up a little later. Evening seems to find us sooner than it did a month ago. And when I step outside first thing in the morning, I can finally feel that slight change in the air that I’ve been waiting for.
It’s funny how a season can change without us really noticing when it happens.
There wasn’t one morning when summer ended and fall began. No clear line separating one from the other. It has been happening little by little while I’ve been going about my days, making coffee, working, walking, writing, making dinner, and doing all the ordinary things that fill a week.
Then one morning, I walked outside and realized something had shifted.
I think life is often like that, too.
We tend to remember the big moments because they’re easy to recognize. The beginnings, the endings, the prayers that are answered in ways we can clearly see.
But so much of our lives happens somewhere in between.
Sometimes God is working in ways that are much quieter than we expected. We keep getting up, moving through our days, taking care of what is in front of us, and trusting Him with the things we can’t see yet.
Then, every once in a while, we look back and realize we’re not standing in quite the same place anymore.
Maybe something that once occupied so much of our thinking has loosened its hold. Maybe we’ve grown more patient without realizing we were learning patience. Maybe the answer we wanted never came in the way we imagined, but somewhere along the way, God gave us enough peace to keep moving forward without it.
Those changes can be easy to miss because they don’t always arrive with an obvious before and after.
Sometimes they settle into our lives more like dew on the grass.
Quietly, while we are busy living.
Maybe that’s why I stood outside a little longer this morning.
There was nothing unusual happening. The neighborhood was waking up. The day ahead would be filled with many of the same things as the day before. In another few hours, the dew would dry and the afternoon would probably feel more like summer again.
But for those few minutes, I could see the season changing right in front of me.
And I didn’t feel the need to rush it.
I didn’t find myself wishing summer away or wondering how soon the leaves would begin to turn. I was simply grateful for the cool air, the morning light, and the dew still resting on the grass.
September was enough exactly as it was.
Maybe there is something worth remembering in that.
We spend so much of life looking toward what comes next that it’s easy to overlook the season we’re already standing in. But there is goodness here, too, even when we’re somewhere between what was and what will be.
So for now, I’ll let September take its time.
I’ll notice the cooler mornings when they come, even if the afternoons are still warm. I’ll watch the light change a little earlier each evening. I’ll walk through grass damp with dew and remember that not everything beautiful arrives all at once.
Some things change quietly.
And sometimes, we only realize how much has changed when we finally slow down long enough to notice.
