Late October coastal landscape overlooking a peaceful sound, with golden marsh grasses, fallen autumn leaves, and thinning tree branches preparing for winter.

Somewhere Between Autumn and Winter

The cooler air has finally settled in, and October is beginning to look a little different than it did just a week or two ago.

I’ve noticed it most in the trees. Their branches are becoming easier to see, and the leaves that once filled them are now scattered across the grass, gathering along driveways and collecting along the edges of the road. Every passing breeze seems to bring a few more down, sending them tumbling across the ground before they settle somewhere else.

There’s still plenty of autumn color to enjoy, but the landscape is slowly losing the fullness it carried through summer. Some trees are nearly bare now, while others are holding on to the last of their golden and rust-colored leaves. Winter hasn’t arrived, but you can certainly see where the seasons are headed.

I was thinking about that recently, how quickly the scenery around us changes once the cooler weather moves in. It seems like only yesterday we were looking for shade beneath those same trees, enjoying long summer evenings and the sound of insects after sunset. Now the mornings call for a sweater, the daylight disappears a little earlier, and the yard seems to need raking almost as soon as it’s been cleaned.

And yet, I find myself appreciating this time of year, too.

There’s a different kind of beauty in seeing the trees stripped of their leaves, with their branches stretching across the pale October sky. The landscape may not be as colorful or inviting as it was a month ago, but it has a peacefulness of its own. Even the familiar roads seem to look different as the woods begin to thin and the views beyond them open up.

I think sometimes we forget that God created the seasons of rest just as surely as He created the seasons of growth. The trees aren’t failing because their leaves have fallen, and the earth hasn’t lost its purpose simply because the flowers have faded. It’s all part of the beautiful rhythm He set in motion long before we were here to notice it.

Perhaps that’s something worth remembering in our own lives, especially when things feel a little quieter or less productive than we’d like. Not every season is meant to be filled with activity, and not every beautiful thing has to be blooming.

For now, I’m enjoying these cooler mornings, the sound of leaves moving across the driveway, and the changing scenery outside my window. Before long, winter will settle in, bringing another kind of beauty to appreciate.

For now, I’m just happy to enjoy whatever October has left to offer.
