A slender crescent moon glows softly in a deep blue summer sky above a quiet coastal shoreline, framed by silhouetted sea oats and wispy clouds, creating a peaceful nighttime scene.

Beneath the Same July Moon

Last night, a little after ten, I slipped into the pool and stretched out on my raft.

The only light in the backyard came from beneath the water. The soft glow of the pool lights shimmered across the surface while everything beyond it faded into darkness.

I looked up.

A small crescent moon rested above me, surrounded by more stars than I usually notice.

It was one of those July nights that makes you want to stay outside just a little longer.

The air was warm and heavy with humidity. It clung to my skin, but I didn’t mind. There was something about the stillness that made me want to linger.

Around me, summer carried on as if it had its own soundtrack.

Frogs called from somewhere beyond the yard.

Crickets answered from every direction.

The cicadas sang from the trees without ever seeming to pause.

Lightning bugs drifted across the grass like tiny lanterns, and every so often, heat lightning quietly illuminated the distant sky before disappearing again.

We’ve needed rain for days now.

The grass has begun to fade from its deep summer green, and the flowers are beginning to bow their heads. Even the evening somehow felt thirsty.

As I floated there listening, I couldn’t help but think about how patiently creation waits.

The trees don’t seem anxious for the rain. They simply stand where they’ve always stood, waiting.

I’ve always loved moments like this.

Not because something extraordinary happens, but because ordinary moments have a way of pointing my heart back to God.

A breeze arriving after a long, hot afternoon, the smell of rain before it falls, or the quiet rise of the moon above the trees.

These little gifts have a way of slowing me down.

As I drifted across the water, my thoughts wandered to my boys.

My oldest son is in the Army and somewhere out in the field this week. I haven’t heard from him in several days, so I picked up my phone and sent him a simple message.

“No matter where we are, we’re always under the same moon.”

I smiled after I pressed send.

I knew it might be days before he ever saw it.

Still, it felt good knowing that wherever he was, if he happened to look up, we’d be sharing the same sky.

A few minutes later, I found myself glancing toward the back door.

My youngest son was still at work.

I knew he’d be home later, and I was waiting for him to come outside.

Some of my favorite summer memories are the quiet ones we’ll probably never think to take pictures of.

Floating in the pool, looking up at the stars, and talking about life. Or sometimes not talking at all.

Just sharing the silence together.

As I waited, an ambulance echoed somewhere in the distance.

The siren grew louder for a moment before slowly fading back into the night.

It was a quiet reminder that while I was floating peacefully beneath a July sky, someone else’s night had taken a very different turn.

And it struck me how many different stories were unfolding beneath that same moon.

Some families were gathered around backyard tables. Others were finishing long shifts or rocking babies to sleep. Some hearts were full of laughter, while others carried grief, prayers for healing, or quiet hope that tomorrow might be different.

Some, like my oldest son, were far from home, while others, like my youngest, were simply on their way home. Different journeys, different stories, all beneath the same July moon.

The same faithful God watching over every one of them.

As I floated there, another thought quietly settled into my heart.

Motherhood never really stops waiting.

When they were little, I waited outside classrooms and doctor’s offices.

I waited through fevers. I waited for them to wake from naps.

Now I wait for one son to come home from work.

I wait for another to come out of the field.

The waiting simply looks different than it once did.

Eventually, I heard the back door open.

I smiled before I even turned around.

The pool lights shimmered beneath us.

Above us, the moon hadn’t moved very far at all.

We floated there beneath the stars while he talked about work, life, and whatever else wandered into the conversation. I listened more than I spoke, grateful that at nineteen he still wanted to tell me about his day.

The frogs continued their evening chorus as lightning bugs drifted through the yard, and every now and then, heat lightning softly illuminated the sky beyond the trees.

Jake and I stayed in the pool until the night grew late. Above us stretched the same sky that covered his brother miles away. We were in different places, living different stories, yet all of us rested beneath the same heavens.

I took a deep breath, closed my eyes for a moment, and felt a quiet peace, knowing the same faithful God was watching over each of us.
